Trogenix makes a gene therapy that switches on only inside cancer cells, where it makes the cell produce substances that kill it and alert the immune system. Its first treatment, for glioblastoma, the most common aggressive brain tumour in adults, entered a first human trial in May 2026.
Trogenix, founded in 2023 and spun out of the University of Edinburgh (its UK Centre for Mammalian Synthetic Biology and Institute for Regeneration and Repair) and the Cancer Research UK Scotland Centre, was incubated by 4BIO Capital. Its Odysseus platform uses synthetic super-enhancers, engineered DNA elements that are activated only in diseased cell states, delivered by AAV vectors to express combination payloads that kill cancer cells and stimulate the immune system, an approach the company describes as personalised in situ vaccination.
In October 2025 it raised a GBP 70 million (USD 95 million) Series A led by IQ Capital, which Cancer Research Horizons called its largest investment to date. In April 2026 it reported preclinical data in Nature in an aggressive brain cancer model, and on 28 May 2026 it dosed the first patient in a phase 1/2 trial of TGX-007, a dual-payload AAV gene therapy, in glioblastoma, with UK and US sites open. A follow-on programme targets colorectal cancer liver metastases, with work in liver and lung cancers.
