## TL;DR

Datar Cancer Genetics' blood test that looks for clumps of tumour cells, sold privately in the UK; the developer's marketing figures go beyond what its own papers report.

## Summary

Datar Cancer Genetics runs the test in laboratories in Nashik, India, and Guildford, UK. In the company-authored Gaya et al. (Cancer Cytopathology 2021), C-ETACs were found in 91.8% of 9,416 people with known cancer and 92.6% of 6,025 symptomatic people diagnosed with cancer, and were undetectable in 96.3% of 13,919 asymptomatic people, meaning about 3.7% tested positive; staining matched histology in 93.1% of a subset. Akolkar et al. (International Journal of Cancer 2020) reported detection in 89.8% of 5,509 cancers and in 3% of 8,493 people with no abnormal findings.

Datar's 2022 Trucheck Intelli brochure claims detection of over 70 solid cancer types, detection of the cancers it screens for 95% of the time, and false positives in around 1% of cases, citing Gaya 2021; that paper's abstract reports neither the 95% nor the 1% figure. No stage I sensitivity has been published, and no peer-reviewed screening-population positive predictive value. A UK reseller lists it at £1,105 plus an £89 GP consultation (Midland Health); that is a reseller's price. CE marking is stated by resellers but was not confirmed from a primary source, and no MHRA, CDSCO or FDA status was found.

## Fields

- Kind: Test
- Status: emerging
- Last checked: 2026-10-29
- Also known as: TruCheck; Trucheck
- Tags: test; mced; evidence:insufficient
- Brand: Trucheck
- Modality: Multi-cancer blood test (circulating tumour cell clusters, immunocytochemistry)
- Mechanism: Harvests circulating ensembles of tumour-associated cells (C-ETACs) from blood and profiles them with organ-specific antibody stains to suggest an organ of origin.

## Notes

- Evidence grade insufficient for the claim that taking this test reduces late-stage diagnosis or cancer deaths: no randomised trial of it has reported either outcome, and its published performance comes from case-control or single-arm studies. The only randomised result for any multi-cancer test, NHS-Galleri, did not show fewer stage III or IV cancers.
- Marketing claims (95% detection, 1% false positives) are not in the cited paper's abstract, which gives a positive rate of about 3.7% in people without symptoms.
- What a result means: a positive result is a reason for further tests, not a diagnosis; a negative result does not rule cancer out and does not replace the screening tests that have been shown to work (bowel, breast, cervical and, where eligible, lung screening).
